Which version? Has to be 1.13.25 -- nothing older, and nothing
newer.

Which filesystem do you use on the directories you try to backup?

Ext2, ext3, reiser, ....?

I am not sure but I assume you should set this to yes:

> define dumptype global {

>     index yes
>     record no <------------------------------- ???
>     program "GNUTAR"

Set this to yes (or remove the line) and try again.
I am not sure if this is important for GNUtar but please try.
