You might check out Amanda......Yes, i agree with you in that some sense Bacula lacks features that make it "usable" for people like a GUI, although BAT is not too bad. If you are resourceful, you can script backups using tar...like they did in the "old" days. In this case you do not need bacula and you can manage everything in terms of a schedule using cron.
What kind of system are you running? Using Tapes? Disk? I have had pretty good luck with Bacula over the years, but I can definitely see where people can get frustrated.
