For RedHat 9
Try the following command as root

chkconfig amanda on

The client aspect of amanda (run via xinetd) is disabled by default! 
The above command turns it on. If that fails then check to see if it 
works after you issue the command 
        service iptables stop
        In which case it is a firewall issue.
