I am using the distribution-packaged install on Ubuntu Server 11.10,
3.2.1-1ubuntu1.1.

Thanks for the suggestion. At the moment, using BackupPC_archiveStart with
an ArchivePreUserCmd is getting the job done. If it gets any more
complicated, I'll do as you suggest.
