I don't think scheduled stopping/starting would be a problem in practice 
- and if it is, perhaps you'll be convinced to add a dedicated server to 
handle it.   The timing is pretty consistent unless you download or 
install large amounts of new data and you should look at the stats on 
the web page occasionally anyway.  You'll be able to tell the 'on' cycle 
you need after a few days and you can tell from the status page if you 
stopped it too soon last time.
