This sounds like a more sensible idea, and I forgot to mention it when
it first came up. Basically, there are hooks to run scripts when you
plugin a usb device (I used to use this to start pppd on my gsm modem
when I plugged it in). You could use this hook to mount your drive,
and start backuppc. Create another small shell script with a link on
your desktop to stop backuppc, umount the drive, and provide some
message to say it has been done successfully.

That should give you mostly what you want. You do of course still need
to recognise that the backuppc nightly script needs to run from time
to rime to properly expire old backups and the pool files.

If you mostly leave the computer on and the external drive attached,
but sometimes need to remove the drive and/or switch off the computer,
then this will work quite well. If not, then go ahead and look for
another tool that will do what you want.

Adam
