I think this thread is getting a bit ridiculous. BackupPC has been
carefully constructed as a server package and you are trying to cobble
together a bunch of kludges to run it a series of cron jobs hoping
that you won't run into collisions between even and odd hours and
relying on the fact that you will remember to re-hook up your external
drive in time for the cron jobs to run.

The purpose of a backup system like BackupPC is to be *reliable* - why
would you want to rely on a bunch of hacks and approximations hoping
they do the right thing.

What is so hard about just doing it right by setting up a dedicated
server?

And if you can't afford a server now, at least follow the absolutely
trivial suggestion recommended by Les to start/stop BackupPC when you
mount/unmount the external drive. That approach seems infinitely
easier and more reliable than your Rube Goldberg-esque combination of
cron jobs.

To me it is beginning to seem like you are stubbornly committed to
going down the same path you started down no matter how many times
people explain to you your misunderstandings.
