The servers file is only important when you run server-initiated processes. 
That's why manual backups and recoveries will work ... and why probes fail.
Careful - a missing servers file is a security issue because it will allow all 
NW servers to retrieve the client's data. However in this case, it does not 
limit the process.

It is a bit unusual that your backup server has a much lower version than the 
client. But it should not really matte for file backups.

At this point i would reinstall the client SW and make sure that the routine 
will configure the FW.
