You have to "./configure --with-gnutar=/your/path/gnutar ..." and
recompile the amanda client.
The absence/presence of GNUTAR is hardcoded into the amanda binaries.
(One of the TODO things).
my solution was to move the original tar to tar.orig and to copy gnutar to
/usr/bin/tar
