I got my amrestore and amrecovers mixed up when i typed this email.

Is it really asking for a specific tape or is it just asking you to confirm
that the tape is inserted and ready to go?

It is my understanding that amrestore was written to not need any information
about an amanda configuration (including changer), nor any other amanda 
commands.
It gets all it needs from the command line and from the headers on the tape it
is restoring.
