Not everybody can afford re-install of a production system.

It _could not_. It's a known workaround in Linux world to make old
software run on newer libc.
http://people.redhat.com/drepper/assumekernel.html can give you a better
idea what LD_ASSUME_KERNEL means.
Unfortunately for Veritas (or Symantec now),
Linux develops on a much faster pace than Veritas can follow (or
understand it)
