Well, unfortunately the virtual autochanger is also something that doesn't have a HOWTO, but is extremely useful.  It is used extensively among Enterprise users who want disk "autochangers".
There exists an Enterprise whitepaper (actually several) on disk autochangers (virtual autochangers).  I will see if that can be adapted for the community -- not so easy because the directives that are implemented are very different in the community and enterprise versions.
