Yes, the normal scheme is to use sudo instead of login to get to root's 
shell, with the logic being that it is safer to use your own password 
and a sudo config that permits the correct user(s) than it is to give 
out the root password to multiple people.  But, if you like having a 
root shell, just 'sudo su -'.  Works on a Mac too, which is probably 
where the nanny mentality comes from.
