First you have to make sure the SSH tunnel works with key based 
authentication (=no password but file) for the user running backuppc. 
That is explained in the backuppc FAQ, Wiki and in other contexts on the 
internet. When it works, it will say SSH started successfully at this point.

If they are in use on the client, i.e. cwRsync.

Exactly. You need to check my HOWTO again, as the rsyncd port is 
probably meant to be 8874 on the server, not 873.

After key-based SSH is set up, all the configs needed go in backuppc, 
and on the client I assume it's already set up as you were using rsnapshot.

Please use "Reply all" to get the mailing list included at least for 
archival.
