As I recently learned, TSM tries to reserve space on disk for
the largest file it's going to backup in the current
session.  If there is not space for that file on disk, it,
and the whole backup, will go directly to tape.  And it
certainly appears as if all subsequent backups from all other
nodes will go to tape as long as there are any active
sessions.
