Hello Randy,

I know very few situations where we can have "optimal settings" as a rule. IMHO, in your case, there is a lot of variables that should be considered when deciding about which "Max Bandwith" value should be used. Such as: amount of RAM, amount of CPU, how many KVM VMs, how many traffic (interfaces, are they boundled?, etc.), how is your traffic configured (vlans to reduce broadcast domains?, etc.), etc.

So, unfortunately, I have other virtualization environments working fine (bonding for specific traffic, VLANs for reducing broadcast domains, etc.) with Bacula and no problem with Bacula throttiling my servers.

Best regards,
Ana

My original question, is anyone using Max Bandwidth successfully and what are YOUR optimal settings?
This is in the context of having multiple KVM VMs backing up from a node. If you are not using Max Bandwidth
then this question is not for you. Thanks!

As for looking into ethtool, subtracting the amount bandwidth average used from capacity and dividing that by the amount
of backup processes minus a percentage for overhead, I can do that, and understand that well. This is not really my question.
If anyone cares to share, I thank you in advance.

Just in time: reading again your initial message I think you assume it is a network bottleneck.
If it's the case you may use ethtool to fetch the actual capacity of your ethernet interfaces (even bad cabling can make a 1000 Gb interface negotiating 100 Mb) and try to estabilish a lower value for Maximum Bandwidth. It will all depend of the network demand of your applications.
