There is probably a difference between the way the two versions of btape
generate the buffer to be written, resulting in one generating data which
comresses much better than the other.

Try using e.g. tar to fill up the tape, and see if there is a significant
difference between the two servers.

Failing that, I have a small program I wrote, which tests a tape by writing
random data to it, then reports on the amount of data/transfer speed. I could
post that if anyone thinks it would be useful (I actually wrote it on Solaris,
but it should work fine under Linux).
