Hello,

I apologize in advance, if a similar question has been asked before, but I
have been searching for about 3 days now and all the answers that I could
find didn't solve my problem.

Here is my situation:

I have an old backup server running Bacula 1.29 (RedHead 7 or so). It works
fine, but we wanted to upgrade the machine and with it bacula.

I took out the tape drive (HP SuperStore DAT24) and its SCSI card and put it
into a new computer. Downloaded, compiled and installed bacula 2.2.8,
configured it and started it. First attempt was all the backups go onto the
new 500GB HDD. Weekly full backup (~20GB), daily differential and hourly
incremental. Worked like a charme. So I wanted to incorporate the tape
drive. System (Ubuntu) recognized it and I configured it in Bacula. Got
picked up and started. Full backups should go to the tape drive, everything
else should go to HDD. Worked all fine, except that the tape seamed to be
full after ~15Gb (plus/minus 200 or 300 MB).

So I thought it's the tape. Different tape, same result. Maybe drive dirty?
Cleaning cartridge, no difference. So I ran all those btape tests. Ran fine.
I ran a fill in btape and the tape was full after ~15Gb. So I executed
tapeinfo, to see if compression was turned on. it was and still is.
Blocksize is set to 0.

Ok, tape drive and SCSI card back into the old computer. Wanted to change
the setup so that the old computer only runs the Storage daemon and the new
server accesses the tape through there. I ran the btape fill again, on the
old machine, old bacula, tape full after 24Gb. Yay! So maybe some weird
driver issue on the new computer.

But of course the new bacula can't communicate with the old bacula. So I
installed new bacula on the old machine. Started the full backup, everything
started fine. Tape full after 15Gb. WTF!!

So now here comes the really weird thing:

On the old machine, I have both bacula 1.29 and 2.2.8. When I use btape from
1.29, the tape gets written with a throughput of ~2MB/s and is full after
24GB. When I run btape from 2.2.8, data throughput is ~800KB/s and the tape
is full after ~15GB.

I'm absolutely clueless here and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
There is nothing specific about the config files, there is nothing about
compression or maximum sizes in them, but I'd be glad to post them, if
someone thinks it might be helpful.

Thansk in advance.
