I don't know if that might be part of your problem.  But it's the only other thing I can think of.

Not really relevant to this thread, but I have in the past added a empty file to each of the removable drives, then test if the file exists before creating the archives. If the drive isn't mounted, the file won't exist. Thus preventing that issue.

I'm sure you've probably considered this previously already :)
