Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.  You are right, I have no 
idea why I was trying to do it the way I was.  I actually did search through 
my e-mail repository archive but didn't find anything (but that doesn't mean 
it wasn't there).

    *Stop BackupPC
    su __BACKUPPCUSER__
    cd NEW_TOPDIR
    mkdir pc
    cd pc
    __INSTALLDIR__/bin/BackupPC_tarPCCopy __TOPDIR__/pc | tar xvPf -
