because bittorrent stores the file list in a file and bittorrent clients use an index for downloaded bits.  rsync stores the filelist in ram. 

Also, there is a patch out there for bittorrent (very easy to apply) that allows you to make a torrent of a block device. rsync wont do this.

One more benny, you can have MULTIPLE remote peers with bittorrent allowing you to distribute the data to 3 sites if you like and save time/bandwidth at the same time.
