No, those are all the same.  RedHat splits packages up into client and 
server packages, and a common.  RPM won't find stuff installed by hand.  
Try 'locate amdump' to see if maybe there are more than one amdump binary 
installed, e.g.

Yes, that 'ls' operates on the indices, which amanda can't find, which is 
why it doesn't work.

As Gene mentioned, compiling from source may very well make these problems 
magically go away -- make sure to 'rpm -e' the pre-installed versions.
