Thats 'tapeinfo' Paul. :-) amtapetype checks the tape in the drive for its actual capacity, and since it uses /dev/urandom as its data source, it won't get very close to 12 gigs if the hardware compressor is on.

Tapeinfo works fine on those systems that have it... :-)
Solaris e.g. does not have it.

And yes indeed, the latest amtapetype does detect hardware compression without using any low level ioctl that is usually very device/OS specific. (I know, because I wrote it. :-)
Try with a scratch tape:

        amtapetype -c

(this takes on on a few minutes to run).
