Many thanks to everyone who lent a hand here! :-)

The problem was solved (special thanks to Jean-Louis) thru a combination
of testing/setting system env variable PRINTER='printer-name', then 
recompiling amanda. I installed the printing system _after_ amanda, so that 
was the main complication.
