Varies with drive and operating system.
Common ways include device selection (eg. on Solaris /dev/rmt/0ln vs
/dev/rmt/0cn
where the "c" indicates compression), by cmd (mt command on Linux and others?),
by front panel switch, or by internal dip switch to set and lock the state at
power up.
