Thanks Dan, that helps.  Someone also pointed me to esg68225, which essentially 
says:
1) Backup the PF as it stands
2) Overwrite the PF with the restore that has the data to recover
3) Export the data to recover
4) Overwrite the PF with the restore from the backup taken in step 1)

Ugh


The good news is that we're migrating from Exch 2003 to 2007, so I will soon 
have a PF I can overwrite, export the data I need, and then delete it.  This is 
also timely in that we are reexamining how we backup the PF's in general.   We 
inherited this config from a consultant, and now that we know the RSG 
prohibition for PF's we going to do some re-config'ing.
