They are only acceptable if you are backing up only the machine that
contains the director. If you need to backup more than that 1 machine
you will either have to use a vaild external ipaddress or a fqdn.
There are no other options.

I guess this was a misunderstanding -- I am backing up only the machine that contains the director, and it appeared to me that this was why it wasn't working.  There must have been another reason which I corrected, even though I didn't understand exactly what I needed to do.
