Using an IP address is a fine idea.
I do basically the same thing, but via a different method.
I have ssh running on an alternate port, running out of xinetd. xinetd
restricts what IPs can connect. The normal sshd doesn't allow root
login; this one does.
You could also accomplish more or less same thing via, e.g., iptables
rules, or tcp wrappers.
