So you only get backups when both the NAS and the main machine are
running. A way better solution would be to a) run backuppc directly on
the nas (if supported), b) run backuppc on the normal servers and
"just" write tapes to the NAS or c) build your own "NAS" with a small
machine with big disks and run minimal Linux+backuppc.
