I thought you were saying that it wasn't different - that is, also
slow locally.   The main difference with NFS would be if you have the
sync option enabled - and then only for writes.  Then, unlike local
disks, the writer waits for the system to acknowledge that the block
is commuted to disk for each write.   The rsize and wsize options
might make a bit of difference too.
