Not sure if this helps, but googling showed that the several reported
cases of rsync giving that error seem to be due to having too many
subdirectories since each subdirectory requires a link back to the
directory and hence the file system max link limitation applies also
to the maximum number of subdirectories. So, in your case is it
possible that you had more subdirectories somewhere than the allowable
max links?
