DRDB's main use is for hot-backup failover servers, so yes, people do
run databases and disk intensive things over it but normally in
close-coupled, high bandwidth situation. I don't know if it is usable
over slower connections for a remote copy or if it has a re-sync mode to
swap external drives.
On thing I think looks promising but haven't had time to test is
opensolaris's zfs filesystem which has a dump-like send/receive function
with an incremental mode based on snapshots. Unfortunately I don't
think it has SATA drivers for the particular machine where I'd want to
use it.
