Has this anything to do with the 3 files in the xinet.d directory
amanda, amandaidx, amidxtape?

Are the services running? Check with
netstat -taunp | grep :1008.
on your backup/index server.



Must a user root added somewhere?

No. Amanda runs as user. You configured amandabackup:disk for this.
