On my system, I have:

mormyrid:amanda$ ls -l /dev/scsi/changer

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 Jan 16 2007 c7t0d0 -> ../../../devices/pci@1f,2000/scsi@1/sgen@0,0:changer

mormyrid:amanda$ ls -l /devices/pci@1f,2000/scsi@1/sgen@0,0:changer

crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 151, 48 Jan 16 2007 /devices/pci@1f,2000/scsi@1/sgen@0,0:changer


I never modified permissions on any of this. I just edited the /kernel/drv/sgen.conf, did a touch /reconfigure, and rebooted. It worked with mtx immediately.
