We're further now. That's already good news.

That was the problem.

Two possible solutions:

1.  Manualy rewind the tape before your read it.
    ( mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind )
    You position it yourself to the correct image with "mt fsf ###",
    if you like.

2.  Since amanda 2.4.4 amanda can do this for you, but you need
    to add these two lines to amanda.conf:
        amrecover_do_fsf yes    # this implies a rewind
        amrecover_check_label yes
