Thanks - I think you hit it right on the head.

inparallel is set to 4 but maxdumps isn't present in the amanda.conf file.

[ I'd have set it if I'd seen it which is why I usually include 
  parameters even when they are set to default values, so I don't
  forget them. ]

I'll insert that, even setting to 2 should be enough.

If I recall spindle numbers properly, the default ignores
the option. So if my disklist file doesn't have a 4th parameter
it 'should' be a non-issue. Correct ?

I'll add "maxdumps 2" and see what happens overnight.
