So I think 2 tapes could have been enough.

Aha, for this case, amanda has (since 2.4.3) the amanda.conf parameter
"taperalgo", which defaults to "first" (take the first image in the directory), while in your case "taperalgo largestfit" would be better.

To maker better use of this algoritm, amanda needs to be able to choose
from many images, therefore it is better to specify "dumporder" too.

I just happened to explain this all a few days ago:

Your DDS2 tape, what is the server hardware?
I think it is faster than my 745/99. Is there a way to tune that? I already
use holding disks.
Are 150kb/sec usual on a slow machine? I think it's compareable to a Pentium
200.

The server hardware is a 4 year old PC with Celeron 333 MHz,
128 MByte RAM, AHA2940 scsi controller, DDS-2 internal, 2 times AIT-1
external, 1 IDE disk 4 GByte with OS etc, and IDE holding disk 80 GByte,
3Com 100Mbit ethernet, Linux 2.4.20.

Nobody here would want that PC running Win2000 on his desk, but for
amanda it is perfect. Here are the statistics for an archive run
in the weekend:

Yes, that's a backup of 214 Gbyte (all full) in half a day.
