Fishing is good - sometimes you catch something. The two are on the same
firewall...just different interfaces/subnets. The client is on 10.1.10.x
while server is on 10.1.8.x...routing table tells interfaces where
everyone is. There weren't any firewall rules dealing with this...I just
added one that lets the server have its way with the client...though
this should have no bearing.
I still don't understand. Do the packets travel trough the firewall,
which is also acting as router between 10.1.8.x and 10.1.10.x?
I also still did not yet complete understand when you have the timeout.
Is it in the estimate phase or is it in the backup phase?
For the estimate phase the amanda server sends a UDP packet to all the
clients, with a list of filesystems to estimate. The clients send their
response back in a UDP packet, when they have finished all the DLE's
to estimate. This could take some time (it used to be almost 3 hours
on an old computer with a large disk, and many many small files on it).
After such a long time, most firewalls usually does not see this UDP
packet as related to the request UDP packet send by the server,
unless explicitly told so, and thus it drops the packet.
See the complete explanation in docs/PORTS.USAGE.
I haven't changed anything on the firewall before today. ???
But maybe someone else did...
