I guess my question was triggered by error messages like:

    root@kanga:~# su operator -c "amcheck -c Daily"

    Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
    --------------------------------
ERROR: kanga.honeypot.net: [could not access /usr/share/media/music/all
(/usr/share/media/music/all): Permission denied]
Client check: 3 hosts checked in 0.388 seconds, 1 problem found

(brought to you by Amanda 2.4.3)

Yes, tar *does* seem to be backing everything up. It seems that only
amcheck is throwing errors.
