There's the problem I have with linux.... We're got a fairly large tech
workforce, with various groups handling the different layers, and if for
example I thought SuSe linux was great because of it's stape drivers I'd
ask for a SuSe box to be built and hey presto, one month later I'll have
a shiny new Red Hat server.

That's hardly a Linux problem, that's a problem in you environment.  If
you ask for a Sun SPARC Solaris 10 server because you want zones and zfs
and your application only supports Solaris, yet your environment provides
you with AIX, you can't really blame Sun for that!
