Hi Carl thanks for the input.

I've checked /var/lib/backuppc/log/LOG and this is the most recent 
output. One thing which was done on this box was to remove a host from 
the GUI (when it was working) and then to remove the backup files from 
/var/lib/backuppc/pc/

So potentially removing the host has stuffed something up.
