[BackupPC-users] Debian / Ubuntu restore solution?
2013-12-10 08:47:28
Hi,
this is my first question, and a really basic one no doubt.
I have a server
running BackupPC on Ubuntu with all the backup data on it. It
also runs smartmon and that's telling me to replace my
server's hard drive because it's detecting problems that could
lead to catastrophic data loss. I have a hard drive on its way.
What is the most effective approach for getting my system going on
a new hard drive with BackupPC running and the other server config
(gateway, DHCP, DNS etc)? Preferably without manually reconfiguring
each software package.
It occurs to me now that it's probably pretty dumb to have the
backups on the same hard drive as the OS running BackupPC.
How about I do something like this:
(1) Move the backups onto a USB drive
(2) Make some sort of Debian-specific image of the OS partitions
(3) Replace hard drive
(4) Restore image from 2 onto new drive
(5) Check BackupPC is happy
It also occurs to me now that there's no point in getting BackupPC
to backup the OS since I'll have it covered by whatever I find for
step (2). Right?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Adam
