Assume one bad tape out of 5 in your backup set.

With a conventional tape backup system that archives on a file by file
basis, you'll be able to read the data on the rest of the tapes.

OTOH, with a tape backup of a filesystem, god knows what you have.
certainly you'll have some data, but hope your filesystem code is good
at ignoring errors without panicing.
