I think the point is that backing up to the same server has some
dis-advantages. Sure, it is better than no backup at all, since it will
solve some cases where you need it, but it will miss a lot of very
important cases as well.

eg, HDD failure, format HDD, error in editing partition table, server
stolen, fire, earthquake, etc...

Using a separate server solves some additional cases where you need a
backup. Using an off-site backup server solves even more cases.

You will need to decide which scenarios you are attempting to protect
against, (accidental file edit/delete, etc) and which cases you are not
concerned about (because cost/benefit is not worth it).

Personally, I would always encourage off-site backups to cover as many
cases as possible (well, nuclear attack, earthquake, etc are likely to
take out both primary and secondary, but then they are also likely to
take out me, so I am not as concerned about those, and in my area they
are very unlikely to occur...)
