Thanks for all the help. I had given a command
"amtapetype -e 400g -f /dev/nst0" before leaving for
the day yesterday. The output on the console I find
today is

Writing 4096 Mbyte compresseable data: 44 sec
Writing 4096 Mbyte uncompresseable data: 79 sec
WARNING: Tape drive has hardware compression enabled
Estimated time to write 2 * 409600 Mbyte: 15800 sec =
4 h 23 min
wrote 12320768 32Kb blocks in 94 files in 5669 seconds
(short write)
wrote 12386304 32Kb blocks in 189 files in 6033
seconds (short write)
define tapetype unknown-tapetype {
comment "just produced by tapetype prog (hardware
compression on)"
    length 386048 mbytes
    filemark 0 kbytes
    speed 67623 kps

As shown, it has "hardware compression on". As per the
suggestions received in reply to my email, the
"hardware compression" should be set to "off". I will
find out how to do this and again give the command
today and the forward the output to the mailing list
in the evening today.

Thanks

Yogesh
