But because this info isn't stored on the tapes ident header block
until the tape has been written to, it won't be stored for future use
if the tape is then removed, or is read and then rewound.

This holds true even for labeling the tape due to the rewinds during
the labeling. So its best to just go ahead and label it, then
rewind
use dd to read the label block out to a scratch file someplace
rewind it again
turn off the compression with the mt command
use dd to re-write the label block saved above
use dd to  write enough /dev/zero to force the drive to flush its
buffers to the media.  Then the hardware compression status is saved
for future use.

Thats probably because there isn't a valid amanda label on the tape
yet.  But it could also be a block size miss-match, amanda isn't quite
as verbose as could be in that case.
