I had AMANDA installed as an RPM through synaptic, so I'm sure it had all
kinds of default options. I tried to just change the dump user wherever I
could find it. I noticed that some apps were still running as "amanda" so I
uninstalled the RPM and manually compiled instead with the user=backup.

Was that due to a manual install rather than the "make install"
done as root with programs built by you from the amanda sources?
If the latter, some part of the install procedure needs to be
checked. But I suspect that is not the case.
