Hello Steve,

That is not entirely correct. You must install the latest st patches to
get support for some tape device types. What you are experiencing is
most likely caused by an unrecognized device type.

Saludos,
Jose.

Thanks for the reply, from what I understand Solaris 8 does not use the st.conf
because the devices are now in the kernel. Our Solaris 8 NetWorker server does
not have a st.conf file configured. Right before the message: Cannot decode
block. Verify the device configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.
We see a writing I/O error, so I am thinking the tape posistioning message was
related to the media error (and I have read that in the Legato Error Messages
pdf from Legato)

Anyone else want to comment on the st.conf on Solaris 8 (whether it is needed
or not)?

Thanks for replying George, I'll let you know what happens.

We, too, used to receive similar error messages. This generally means
that you do not have the proper device file configuration set up. I
think it has to do with variable block size, or some such thing, wherein
NetWorker want to determine the size to use so it has to be set to zero
(I recall?) to allow it to do this. We're running Red Hat Linux, and in
our case, the culprit was our failure to create an /etc/stinit.def file.
Never mind the fact that you have to have the correct entries. We didn't
even have the file period. Once we created the file with the necessary
contents and rebooted, our problems went away. We would still see these,
though, if we tried to recover data from tapes that had been created
prior to the changes. If you're running another flavor of unix then the
proper device configuration file will differ. I think Sun uses st.conf.
But, again, this sort of mischief can be solved by similar withcraft.
You just have to configure the proper file.

What does this error message mean? Do I have a tape device(s) misconfigured?

07/14/03 04:48:30 nsrd: media notice: Volume "057978" on device
"rd=usorlu21:/dev/rmt/11cbn": Cannot decode block. Verify the device configuration. Tape
positioning by record is disabled.

Thanks
