I have the start-up script that I copied from my source directory after I
compiled Bacula. I have put them in /etc/init.d and I start it from there.

I think *.mail files are junk left over from crashes.
How are you starting the Bacula daemons? These files are never deleted by the
startup script that I use (the standard ones AFAIK).
