That was for:
mt -f /dev/nst0 status

If so this is really bad. It is essential that mt works with your tape drive

Does

mt -f /dev/st0 status

work?

If not do any of the following work:

mt -f /dev/nst1 status

or

mt -f /dev/st1 status
